— Jon Stewart..
"God is playing a comic to an audience that's afraid to laugh."
“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
— Voltaire..
"What happens when we're dead? The irony is that all our questions will be answered after we die. We spend our whole life trying to figure out the truth and the only way we'll find out what it is, is to get hit by a bus. And the only comfort that religion offers is that God is driving that bus."
— John Ryman, "When Galaxies Collide"..
“Knock, And He'll open the door
Vanish, And He'll make you shine like the sun
Fall, And He'll raise you to the heavens
Become nothing, And He'll turn you into everything.”

I knew weddings had got out of hand these days but turning them into political fundraisers is just sick. They don’t mention baby showers and bar/bat mitzvahs. Oversight, or a sign of a tiny bit of decorum still lurking somewhere in the dark hearts of campaign fundraisers?
yeah, especially when it’s a lot of family at weddings, whom you may well love but don’t get to choose. Chances are decent quite a few of them would not be amused. Might leave a kinda sour taste, actually.
But really, it is a true innovation, and it comes at a time when I’d taken to assuming that political fundraising could only get worse in degree, not in kind. Makes me ashamed, in fact: while I’m content to “fiddle-faddle in a minor key” (as the poet says), true genius is still out there, discovering whole new worlds of meta-kitsch. I say we give credit where it’s due, no matter how painfully it exposes our own failures of the imagination.
Funerals maybe? “In lieu of flowers, please respect Morry’s last wishes and donate…”
Believe it or not, the “in lieu of flowers” bit at funerals has already been mentioned on this post on the Obama site blog. As well as the suggestion that instead of money from the tooth fairy, a note stating that a donation to the Obama campaign has been made in lieu of.
Amy,
See? I told you I’ve turned into a hopeless duffer. But at least me no longer ashamed. Now me humiliated.
Hopeless duffer?
Deeply and irretrievably humiliated…
duffer |ˈdəfər|
noun informal
an incompetent or stupid person, esp. an elderly one : he’s the most worthless old duffer.
• a person inexperienced at something, esp. at playing golf.
Gunny:
Or:
Duff: as in, that appliance isn’t working. Or: that’s a duff [not very good] job.
Incompetent? Stupid? Elderly? Errrrrrrr…
I really am in the wrong line of work:
