This came as a complete surprise to me. Alexander Cockburn has died. I did not know he was terminally ill, and had been so for some considerable time.

I’ve read him on and off for many years in the usual places — The Nation, CounterPunch, etc — and even his periodic pieces in that excellent and quirky flamethrowing newspaper The Anderson Valley Advertiser, which almost nobody has ever heard of.

A good and fearless writer, with withering wit and an easy and felicitous style, from a family where excellent and fearless writing is the norm.

I recommend the Counterpunch website to all. Not as a place to find agreement necessarily, though there will be some of that unless you’re crazy, but certainly as a source of thoughtful commentary on a wide range of topics.

I’m going to miss this guy.

That is sad. Must be about the only true left-wing family left hanging out in the USA. (I worked with a relative of his here in England for a while.)

    Thumb up 0
