I just had to stay awake to see how the Mars landing went. So far so good. Sometime tomorrow maybe there will be some high-resolution photos, even video, of the landing and Other Things.
For right now though, we have this low-res thumbnail photo of the shadow of Curiosity as it sits parked, seemingly in one piece, on the Martian surface.
Not much as photographs go, I suppose, but considering it’s right after landing, and considering it’s before any of the fancy gear gets unfolded, and considering it’s on fucking Mars, well, ’nuff said.

A wonderful achievement. I love this kind of stuff.
Same here Gunny. Mind you this morning NPR did use the word plunder in relation to the mission – or at least where it might lead in the future. Can the demographic term Martian-American be far off?
Expat,
That movie already crashed and burned last week.
And we did it for cheaper than the Olympics. Who says government is inefficient?
Wouldn’t that be “American-Martian,” if the immigrants are Americans to Mars? If it’s the other way round (Martian immigrants), I’m sure they’d rather immigrate to somewhere where there’s decent health care. And not so many guns. And where they wouldn’t be labeled “elitist” for being bilingual.
I’m thinking American-Martians are going to need some serious single-payer health care. With a robust mental health component.
You are absolutely correct Madame. Thank you. That’s why we all need an editor
